The artist couple Sofie Lachaert and Luc Dhanis are nomads between applied and fine art. In doing so, they transform seemingly banal everyday objects or inconspicuous things into autonomous objects of great iconic value.
The two artists love to deceive the viewer and mislead him with subtle humor. For example, dirt on shoes turns out to be diamond dust, floating brooches on the wall are actually kilograms of grotesquely grown minerals, and the lightness two chairs embrace with skillfully belies the massive weight of bronze.
Nothing here is as it seems. Camouflage and trompe-l’oeil unsettle our gaze and force us to look closely, sharpening our perception while reflecting the nature of things. In all their work, precision and formal rigor are as crucial to the two artists as exact craftsmanship.
